Something about the simplicity of first-person shooter (FPS) games keeps me coming back for more. I’ve played FPS games since my dad, and I used to take turns on the original Doom, and it’s a genre that’s still going strong today. I even play them on my new Nintendo Switch while my husband drives us to the in-laws’ house.
And like any good gamer, I debate which ones are best. So let’s get started! Here are ten of the best FPS titles for the Nintendo Switch right now—from classic throwbacks you might have missed to new releases proving this decades-old genre still has plenty of innovation.
1. Killing Floor 2
Killing Floor 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Tripwire Interactive and published by Deep Silver. It is the sequel to the 2009 video game Killing Floor. The game was released for Microsoft Windows on November 18, 2016, PlayStation 4 on August 29, 2017, and Xbox One on September 6, 2018. In addition to online multiplayer support (with up to eight players per session), Killing Floor 2 also provides offline cooperative modes with up to six players against AI opponents or in “versus” matches where two teams of players go against each other; these offline modes can also be played solo or with another player in split-screen mode.
2. Superhot (and Superhot VR)
Superhot is a first-person shooter game in which time only moves when you do. When you’re moving and taking out enemies, time will slow down to a crawl, giving you ample opportunity to plan your next move. However, when an enemy lands an attack on you or shoots at you, time will speed up significantly so that they can have their chance at fighting back against your onslaught.
Superhot VR is an enhanced version of the original Superhot game that was released for regular consoles such as PS4, Xbox One, and PC (Windows). It’s a great way to play FPS games if you want something different from what most other titles offer in terms of gameplay mechanics while still having high-quality graphics without spending too much money on hardware upgrades like sensors or controllers
3. Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation. It is the sequel to the original mod Team Fortress for Quake and its remake, Team Fortress Classic. Unlike most other popular FPS games where you have to go through a linear campaign and play missions one after another, in TF2, you can choose your path through several different game modes that unlock at different levels.
Team Fortress 2 has been praised for its community diversity, eclectic character designs, and its approachable tutorial design, which teaches players, new mechanics by example through various in-game challenges and achievements rather than forcing them with long text explanations or boring handholding tutorials.
4. DOOM 64
DOOM 64 is a great FPS game. It has a great story, with plenty of action to get you hooked. Not only that, but it also has some of the best graphics and music in any Nintendo Switch FPS game. The multiplayer is fast-paced and fun, with an excellent selection of weapons that will keep you entertained for hours on end! There’s even some replayability if you want to try different difficulty settings or go back through the levels again (or try out different areas).
The controls are easy enough to use that anyone could pick up this game and play it right away with no problems whatsoever; whether they have played other shooters before or not doesn’t matter here because there aren’t any complicated mechanics present at all times during gameplay sessions which means there isn’t anything holding anyone back from having fun while playing this title either – everyone will be able to enjoy themselves regardless!
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a remastered version of the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It was released on November 4, 2016, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
Modern Warfare Remastered is set in contemporary times with fictional events occurring worldwide. The player assumes control of various characters during missions as either a U.S Army Ranger, British SAS operative, or Russian Spetsnaz GRU operative.
The single-player campaign follows John “Soap” MacTavish and Captain Price as they fight alongside the remaining survivors from the Bravo Team after the oil rig level against Makarov’s ultranationalist forces following their detonation of bombs across Europe which killed several civilians at Blackout Point near London Bridge on July 29th, 2018 (the day before London hosted its annual fireworks display).
Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale game that has taken the world by storm. If you’re familiar with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or Minecraft, you know what Fortnite is all about. It’s a game where you collect items and build structures to defend yourself against other players while trying to be the last one standing.
7. Wolfenstein II: The New Colussus
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a first-person shooter video game developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order and was released worldwide in October 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
The game follows series protagonist William “B.J.” Blazkowicz as he leads his surrogate family of resistance fighters against Nazi forces occupying the United States while attempting to defeat Deathshead’s zombie army with their elite Super Soldiers; it features several alternate campaigns that follow other characters such as Anya Oliwa (the daughter of a Spanish Republican pilot), Fergus Reid (a former soldier), Jessica Valiant (a member of the African-American Resistance), Sigrun Engel (an explosives expert) and Grace Walker (a freedom fighter from Montana).
8. Borderlands 2
Borderlands 2 is a first-person shooter role-playing video game developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It is the sequel to 2009’s Borderlands and was released on September 18, 2012, in North America. The game was ported to Linux, macOS, PlayStation Vita, and Android in 2016 as part of The Handsome Collection and its prequel Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. A sequel titled Borderlands 3 has been announced but not yet released.
The game follows four new Vault Hunters: Salvador (voiced by Nick Herman), Maya (voiced by Ashly Burch), Axton (voiced by Chris Rager), and Zer0 (voiced by Brandon Keener) as they fight Handsome Jack, who has taken over Pandora’s moon Elpis. They fight against Hyperion forces across Pandora while discovering its secrets while simultaneously facing off against Handsome Jack’s army of cybernetic soldiers called “Handsome Soldiers.”
Overwatch is a team-based first-person shooter video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The game features a wide array of heroes, each with unique abilities and role classes. Players take control of these heroes as they compete in 6v6 objective-based matches, such as capturing control points or escorting a payload across the map.
Overwatch was announced at BlizzCon 2014 in a cinematic trailer featuring characters Tracer and Reaper, who would be the two protagonists for the game’s announcement trailer that year. It was shown again during BlizzCon 2015 with new information on new characters like Tracer, Widowmaker, Reinhardt, McCree, and Soldier: 76 is revealed.
It wasn’t until 2016 that we got our first taste of gameplay footage from E3 2016, where they also talked more about what makes Overwatch so unique to them than other shooters today (cough cough, Call Of Duty cough cough).
10. Doom (2016)
Doom is a 2016 first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. Doom was released on May 13, 2016, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The game is considered a reboot of the Doom series, with the player taking control of an unnamed space marine who battles demonic creatures on Mars while trying to stop them from invading Earth. The game mixes shooting and horror elements from previous installments in both campaigns and multiplayer modes.
So, If you’re looking to jump into the FPS genre on your Nintendo Switch, these ten games can’t be missed.
