Sometimes when I’m on the go and want to kill a little bit of time, I’ll pull out my Nintendo Switch and play a game. If you, too, like playing games on your Nintendo Switch, here are some fun titles worth checking out!
1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fighting game developed and published by Nintendo. The game is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros series, which features characters from various Nintendo franchises.
The game was released on December 7, 2018, for the Nintendo Switch console and became available for pre-order on Amazon on May 12th of the same year.
In this installment of the series, players can choose from over 100 playable characters from or inspired by various video games including Mario, Donkey Kong and even Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII!
2. Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler is a game that stands out among the many games available now. It has a unique way of telling its story, which consists of eight different stories with eight different characters. The gameplay is similar to the classic JRPGs of old, but updated with modern elements like free-aiming and multiple battle types (such as defense and offense).
The music in Octopath Traveler is incredibly well done, with each character getting their own personal theme song (and several additional songs as well). The visuals are gorgeous as well, with smooth animations and beautiful art design across all 20 different environments you visit throughout your journey.
Octopath Traveler does a great job at making you feel like you’re partaking in an epic adventure through each new area you discover; there’s always something new to see or do when moving from one location to another. Each character has their own unique abilities that give them access to secret areas not meant for everyone else; this gives players plenty of reason to go back through dungeons again once they’ve finished them for the first time around!
3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a hack-and-slash action game from Marvel and Team Ninja. It has a story mode that allows you to play as your favorite characters from the Marvel universe. You can also play with friends or on your own in a multiplayer mode, which features cooperative gameplay and competitive multiplayer battles. This game is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch and has many different modes including:
This game was developed by Nintendo EPD, published by Nintendo and released on June 19, 2019 for $59.99 USD
4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a role-playing game developed and published by Nintendo. It is the first Fire Emblem game to be released on a home console, after all previous entries were only available for handheld systems. The story takes place in the same world as Fire Emblem: Awakening, but it’s not necessary to have played that game to enjoy this one. In fact, if you’re new to the series, you’ll find it much easier to jump right into this one without having experienced any of its predecessors!
Fire Emblem: Three Houses was designed with beginners in mind: there’s no need to worry about losing characters or restarting missions because they died; instead of dying when they reach zero HP (health), they go unconscious and can be revived at designated spots throughout each battle map.
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a great game. If you’re not convinced yet, here are five reasons why it should be on your Nintendo Switch games list.
- It has an incredible story and gameplay. The gameplay is made up of many different elements, including puzzle-solving, exploring, and fighting bad guys. You can play as Link in this game and explore Hyrule as he tries to find his identity after waking up from a 100-year sleep. Along the way, he will meet other characters that help him along his journey or try to stop him from doing what needs to be done in order for Hyrule to survive once again.
- It changed the Zelda franchise forever: This game introduced new mechanics that have now become staples for future Zelda titles like Breath Of The Wild 2nd Edition (2019). Some examples include how players can climb tall structures easily with their sword; use ancient magic items called Runes; create bombs by mixing ingredients together; find hidden treasures in dungeons; cook meals with buff foods which give special perks when eaten.
6. Pokken Tournament DX
Pokkén Tournament DX is a fighting game, but you’re probably already familiar with that. It’s also, however, a port of Pokkén Tournament for Wii U, so if you don’t have access to the Nintendo Switch and have somehow missed out on it until now (how?), you can still enjoy the game.
So what exactly is this game about? It’s a fighter that revolves around Pokemon battling each other using their special movesets. Think of it like Super Smash Bros., except with more focus on technical skill than just button mashing your way through each match. The roster includes over 20 different Pokemon from across all generations of the series and features various modes such as story mode and arcade mode for solo play or local multiplayer action with up to 4 people at once!
7. Splatoon 2
Splatoon 2 is a team-based third-person shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Splatoon 2 builds upon the base gameplay of its predecessor, Splatoon, with several new features.
Splatoon 2 introduces new special weapons as well as a single-player campaign, which sees players navigate through various stages to rescue Zapfish from the Octarians and return them to Inkopolis. The game also introduces Splatoon’s multiplayer mode known as Salmon Run in which teams must collect eggs whilst battling against waves of enemies.
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the few games that truly allows you to do and be whatever you want. The world is yours to explore and conquer, complete with dragons, magic spells, swords, bows and arrows—you name it. It’s a game where you can go into battle as a warrior clad in full plate armor or equip yourself with a dagger and mace for stealthy assassination missions. You can even harness the power of fireballs or ice shards from your fingertips if that’s what floats your boat (or not).
ARMS is a fighting game that brings the Nintendo Switch to life. In this game, players use extendable arms to fight against their opponents in a variety of modes. There are mini-games and multiplayer options for all ages, which makes ARMS a fun game for everyone to play. The characters are colorful, with unique personalities and abilities that help them stand out from one another.
ARMS’s gameplay is what sets it apart from other fighting games on the market: instead of using punches or kicks, you have extendable arms that can be used as weapons! You’ll need quick reflexes and good strategy if you want to win your next match!
10. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an action role-playing game developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo for the Switch. The game was released worldwide in December 2017, with a port on the iOS platform announced in May 2018.
The game takes place on the fictional world of Alrest, which was once an Earth-like land until a conflict known as the Shattering took place and caused it to fall from orbit into a sea of clouds called Oblivia. The player assumes control of Rex, a Driver who wields one of several Blades that can be found in this world; other characters include Pyra (a girl who becomes Rex’s Blade), Nia (another Driver and friend), Tora (a mercenary) and Dromarch (an ancient Blade). The main story follows Rex’s quest to restore his homeland Elysium after waking up with no memory but some mysterious powers, meeting other Drivers along the way who want their own homelands restored as well.
11. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a racing game for the Nintendo Switch. It is the first Mario Kart game to feature a Battle Mode and includes 48 different tracks, a variety of characters, and vehicles. The Battle Mode features five different modes: Balloon Battle (players toss balloons at one another), Bob-omb Blast (two players take turns tossing bombs at each other in an attempt to eliminate them from play), Coin Runners (each player tries to collect as many coins as possible before time runs out), Shine Thief (collect power ups while avoiding opponents), and Renegade Roundup (capture 15 enemies for points).
12. Diablo III Eternal Collection
Diablo III Eternal Collection is a great game to play on Nintendo Switch. This action-RPG has a great story, gameplay, and multiplayer modes. It’s also fun to play with friends! The graphics are beautiful and the soundtrack is stunning.
13. Super Mario Odyssey
The gameplay is one of the most important parts of a video game, so it’s good to know what you’re getting into. Super Mario Odyssey is a 3D platformer that lets players control Mario as he travels through different kingdoms and lands in an effort to collect special moons (each kingdom has its own moon). Along the way, players will run into enemies called “Creepy Creatures” which they can either avoid or defeat by jumping on them or throwing Cappy at them. You’ll also encounter traps like cannons and bottomless pits; be sure not to fall into these!
In this game, Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach but this time he plans on marrying her instead of eating her like usual. To get back at him, Mario must travel through different kingdoms trying to find all seven “sparkling leaves.” As usual with any Mario game there are plenty of colorful characters waiting around every corner—you never know who might pop out next!
14. Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze
Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze is a Nintendo Switch game that’s great for kids and adults alike. It is also a very good platformer, regardless of your age, which makes it perfect for people who want to play games on the go. Finally, although the title contains the word “Donkey Kong” in it and features a character named Donkey Kong, this is not actually part of any of the Donkey Kong Country games (although it does share some thematic elements).
15. Super Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Maker 2 is a platforming game that allows you to create your own levels. You can use the touch screen on your Nintendo Switch to draw and edit levels, and then share them with other players. The game includes over 100 different tools, such as pipes and cannons, which you can use to create unique levels that truly challenge yourself or other players.
Super Mario Maker 2 also includes a new multiplayer mode where up to four players can join in the fun!
Cuphead is a classic run and gun indie platformer. The game was well received by critics, who praised its hand-drawn visuals, music, challenging gameplay and unique visual style. The game also won several awards for its art direction and sound design. Cuphead has sold over three million copies worldwide as of December 2018.
17. Astral Chain
Astral Chain is a stylish action game with a few role-playing elements. You play as a special police officer who can transform into a Legion, which means that you’ll spend most of your time fighting enemies in the form of giant robots. There aren’t many puzzles to solve using your Legion; instead, it’s more of an offensive weapon that lets you unleash combos by pressing buttons in time with onscreen prompts. The combat is fast-paced and satisfying, but you might find yourself getting bored with Astral Chain after playing through its lengthy campaign once or twice.
We hope you’ve enjoyed exploring this list of the 17 best Nintendo Switch games worth playing. No matter what games you end up buying, playing, or revisiting on your Switch, we hope you have a blast! Remember to take some time out and try something new!
