Video games are more about graphics than ever before. For some, cutting-edge graphics make or break a game. They bring the action to life and immerse you in the experience. For others, there’s no point in playing a game that doesn’t look good. Video games have pushed the limits of what’s possible with modern technology—and they’re only going to get better from here. Here are five video games that have set the bar for what’s possible with next-generation consoles and cutting-edge PCs:
1. The Evil Within 2
The Evil Within 2 is a horror game that was released in 2017. It’s set in a parallel universe to its predecessor, but it’s not necessary to play it first. The Evil Within 2 uses the same engine as Resident Evil 7, which means it has some of the best graphics.
The game is scary! The graphics are amazing, but if you’re not into horror video games or don’t like being scared by things popping up unexpectedly, then The Evil Within 2 isn’t for you. This game isn’t for children because it has blood and gore, so keep that in mind if any of your kids want to try playing this one on your gaming console (or PC).
2. Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy
The Uncharted series has long been one of the most visually stunning games on the market, and Uncharted 4 is no exception. The game was released in May 2016 after a three-year development cycle that saw Naughty Dog add an entire year of polish to what they had previously considered finished. This extra time was well spent, as their work on Uncharted 4 earned them their first-ever nomination for Best Visual Arts at the 2017 Game Awards.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is also nominated for Best Visual Arts at this year’s Game Awards, which will be held on December 7th in Los Angeles.
3. Wolfenstein 2
First-person shooters are a dime a dozen, but few capture the aesthetic of their settings the way Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus does. Set in an alternate history where World War II never ended, and Germany won (and then went on to conquer America), this game’s graphics are impressive because of their technical quality and attention to detail. From the lush greenery of idyllic Germany to the grimy streets of occupied America, you will find it all here in lavish detail. The only thing missing is a full-size Nazi zeppelin hovering over your head—but if you’re lucky enough to have an Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, then maybe you can just pretend it’s there anyway!
4. Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Western-themed action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games. It is the second installment in the Red Dead series, following 2010’s Red Dead Redemption. In a fictionalized version of the Western United States, players control outlaw Arthur Morgan, a Van der Linde gang member, as they rob, fight, and steal their way across the American frontier.
Red Dead Redemption 2 features an open-world environment that players can explore on foot or horseback. Aside from story missions, side activities include hunting, fishing, and interacting with non-playable characters (NPCs). In addition to traditional multiplayer modes such as free roam and deathmatch, there is also a “Red Dead Online” mode that can be played solo or with others online; it allows players to engage in cooperative play against NPCs or human opponents for missions taken from other games such as Grand Theft Auto V or Fortnite Battle Royale.
5. Horizon Zero Dawn
In the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, you play as Aloy, a young woman who must hunt down a series of mechanical monsters while uncovering the mysteries of her past. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic future where humans have been forced to live in primitive tribes after an unknown cataclysmic event wiped out most life on Earth.
The game has won several awards for its graphics and gameplay, including Game Critics Awards for Best Original Game and Best Action/Adventure Game; Golden Joystick Awards for PlayStation Game of the Year; IGN Best PS4 Game Of 2017; and Time’s Top 10 Games Of 2017 (among others).
So, we’ve established that games are not just for kids. They’re also an art form in their own right. This means that video game graphics should be treated concerning traditional art forms like painting or sculpture. The goal is to create something beautiful, not just something functional. If a game maker wants to make a great video game, they need to ensure that everything from character design to level layout fits together seamlessly into one cohesive package. That’s where budget comes into play; you need money to hire artists and programmers who can work at creating high-end visuals without sacrificing gameplay quality! And don’t forget about your sound effects, too: these are equally important when it comes down it what makes up an immersive experience for players!
