How to Clone a Hard Drive on Windows

Introduction – This article is for Windows users who want to clone a failing hard drive to a new one

This article is for Windows users who want to clone a failing hard drive to a new one.

We’ll show you how to clone your old drive to a new, larger SSD. A hard drive with no problems can be cloned before it becomes an issue, but if you have an aging drive that’s starting to act up, cloning it now will give you a backup in case something goes wrong later.

After the clone, you’ll have an exact copy of your old drive’s files and system on your new one. You can then safely replace the old drive or use it for other purposes—we recommend erasing the contents of your original Windows system drive and using it as additional storage in a USB enclosure. If something goes wrong when you’re upgrading hardware or installing software, you can boot back into the original system drive at any time without losing any data or settings.

A drive clone is a copy of all the data from one hard drive. It can be used as a backup or as a way to transfer the data to another drive

A hard drive clone is a copy of all the data on one hard drive. The clone can be used as a backup or as a way to transfer the contents of the hard drive to another drive.

Step 1: Ensure the new drive is installed in or connected to your computer

First, make sure that the new drive is installed in or connected to your computer. If you are replacing a drive, unplug the data and power cables from your old hard drive, then remove it from your computer. Install the new drive into the place of the old one by connecting the same data and power cables. If you are adding a new drive, use a SATA cable and power cable to connect the new hard disk to your computer’s motherboard.

Step 2: Install Macrium reflect free

  • Download Macrium Reflect Free from the Macrium site.
  • Run the setup file—it’s a standard installation wizard, so just keep pressing Next whenever you’re prompted to.
  • When it’s finished installing, launch Macrium Reflect Free from your Start Menu.

Step 3: Select the drive to clone

In this step, you’ll just need to select the source drive which is the original drive that you want to clone, and the destination drive which will be your new storage device. You’ll need to make sure that they’re labeled properly as it can be easy to get confused with drives as they all look the same. The good news is that hard drives usually have their model name on them, so you can use that information to help identify them.

Step 4: Select a cloning destination drive

With Clonezilla selected and your bootable media inserted, you can finally start the process of cloning your hard drive.

Before we move on to Step 5: Begin cloning, make sure to select the destination drive. It needs to be large enough for everything on the source drive (the one you’re copying) and should be empty or have data that you don’t mind losing. If you’ve followed this article so far and have a new, clean hard drive ready to go, then you don’t need to look at these options further as they will already be selected for you.

Step 5: Select partitions

At this point, the clone should start. If you’ve chosen to manually select partitions, you’ll see another screen where you can select which partitions you want to clone. The default is to choose all of them (which is what most people will want), but if you only need a few partitions from your drive and maybe want to create more partitions on the target drive, there are options for that here.

If EaseUS Todo Backup is unable to read the file system on your old hard drive, it will ask you about the types of files it contains so it can make the best guess about how to copy them over. This isn’t something most users will have to worry about.

Step 6: Save your configuration

You’ve come to the end of your hard drive cloning process. Nice work!

If you’re planning on using this hard disk cloning configuration in the future, it’s smart to save it. This way, if you ever need to use it again, you can just open it up rather than create a new one from scratch. Additionally, because the configuration has been configured with your specific computer model in mind, ideally you’d be able to use this same configuration on other similar computers without having to modify anything at all (if they’re running Windows 10 that is).

If your computer is unique or special and this exact configuration won’t work again in the future, but you still want to change something about the current configuration, feel free. The options are endless! Or maybe this was just a one-time thing and you have no intention of ever doing another one like it—and that’s fine too. There’s no reason for us to keep files around that we don’t need anymore; deleting them from our machines can help keep things tidy and efficient.

Step 7: Clone

When you run the cloning software, a simple dialog will appear on the screen, asking you to choose a source disk and target disk. You’ll use the drop-down menus to select your internal drive as the source, and your new external drive as the destination.

Once that’s done, just click Clone. Depending on how much data is stored on your hard drive, it might take a while for everything to copy over—anywhere from 30 minutes to hours. When it’s finished, you can shut down your computer and swap out your internal drive for the external one that now holds its contents. Then boot up as usual…and voila! Your system is cloned!

What’s nice about this is you won’t have to reformat the new drive or reinstall your OS on it. The migration process will do that for you

What’s nice about this is you won’t have to reformat the new drive or reinstall your OS on it. The migration process will do that for you. Reformatting a drive erases all the data on it, and reinstalling an operating system would wipe out all your data as well (unless you back everything up first).

The best part is that you can continue to use your computer while the cloning is taking place. Not only will your PC restart once the cloning process is complete, but you’ll also be able to boot from either of the drives whenever you please.

Conclusion – Cloning software makes cloning a hard drive simple and fast because it copies your data and moves it automatically

With cloning software, you can create a reliable backup of your files and operating system and have it readily available when you need it. More importantly, the software automates the migration process so you don’t have to do any formatting or reinstalling on the new drive. It automatically copies your data from the old drive to the new one when it’s done. You wouldn’t want to be in a situation where your hard drive fails and you’re left with no way to rescue your files!

Cloning software is a simple utility that makes an exact copy of all of your data—and that’s what makes it superior to other backup methods. It’s fast, easy, and secure—allowing you to complete any kind of urgent IT project without hassle.
