USAA - How to Transfer Money to Another Bank

Transferring money between accounts at USAA and other banks is a convenient way to organize your finances. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps of transferring money from one bank account to another using the USAA platform. To transfer money using USAA flow through these steps:

Select “Transfer Money” from the Menu

You’ll first need to open the USAA mobile app on your device to transfer money to another bank. Once you’re in the USAA mobile app, select “Transfer Money” from the menu. In this screen, enter your external bank’s routing and account numbers. You can find these values on a check if you don’t already know them by heart.

Next, enter your external bank’s username and password for the account receiving funds from USAA Bank. This information may differ from your login credentials for other financial institutions or even for transfers within USAA. Be sure to use only numbers when entering these fields so that nothing gets accidentally entered as text. Then, review all of the information entered before tapping Continue at the bottom of this screen (or along its right edge).

Enter a Nickname and nickname category for your External Bank Account

You can create a nickname for your external bank account by entering a name and category. Nicknames are how you can view the details of your external bank account on USAA’s website. In addition to nicknames, USAA allows you to hide or unhide your external account from the main menu when logged in. To do so:

  • Click on “Edit Profile” at the top right of any page after logging into your USAA account
  • Scroll down to find “External Bank Accounts.”
  • Click on “unhide” next to each one of your external accounts that aren’t currently hidden
  • Enter your external bank’s routing number and the account number you wish to link, then select “Continue.”

You’ll need the external bank’s routing and account numbers to transfer money. A routing number is a nine-digit number that identifies your external bank, and an account number is a ten-digit number identifying the specific account at that institution.

The routing and account numbers are printed on checks (just like they are with credit cards), so you can just pull one out of your wallet or purse if you need it right away. If not, these two digits are also found on checks under “routing transit number” and “account number,” respectively. Both will be on the bottom left of the check itself.

Review the list of accounts available for linking, then select the account(s) you wish to link

Once you’ve determined which accounts you’d like to link, it’s time to set them up. The first step is simply selecting the account(s) from the list that USAA offers by clicking “Select” next to each account. If you’re transferring money from one bank to another, you’ll need to choose an external bank account as your destination (below).

You can also select up to 15 external bank accounts at once if you wish; however, when transferring funds more than once per day, we recommend connecting only one external account at a time as this will speed up the process of moving money between banks.

Review and verify all of your information, then select “Continue.”

Once you hit “Continue,” you’ll be taken to a second screen that allows you to review and verify all of the information from your previous steps. Any errors will appear here, so make sure everything is correct. You can edit any part of this information if need be, but don’t forget that it must match what’s on file at your bank or institution.

If everything looks good and there are no errors, select “Submit.”

Select “Submit” to complete your request; a confirmation screen will appear after you’ve made your request. This will show all the information you entered and provide links to your external bank account. You can also view the date and time of your request, along with the amount of money being transferred.

Transferring money between banks with USAA is quick and Easy.

Click on “Transfer Money” from the drop-down menu. Then Select “From Bank” or “To Bank,” depending on which bank you’d like to transfer funds from or to. Choose a service (such as checking or savings) that has funds available for transfer at this time (if you don’t see any, click “Unavailable”). Enter an amount of money to transfer into your account via a direct deposit agreement with another financial institution (which may include payroll, Social Security benefits, and other government entitlement programs).

Final Wrap Up

Now that you’ve transferred your money between USAA accounts, you can use the remaining funds in your external bank account to send or receive payments through the USAA app or website. You can also deposit checks using the deposit slip generated when you link your accounts.
