Bond, James Bond. Many actors have portrayed the world’s most excellent secret agents, but the list below ranks them in order of greatness.
1. Sean Connery
Sean Connery was the first actor to play James Bond in the movie Dr. No, and he was also the first Bond of any kind to be Scottish. He married actress Diane Cilento in 1962, but they divorced four years later. The first pet owned by a James Bond actor was a black Doberman Pinscher named Pickles that appeared alongside Sean Connery for a brief time in Dr. No and From Russia With Love before being killed off in Goldfinger (though it had been retired long before).
You’ve probably heard of this: Sean Connery is known as “the original James Bond,” but plenty of other actors have played 007 over the years, too!
2. George Lazenby
George Lazenby was born in 1939 in Australia. George Lazenby is the only Bond actor to play the role for only one film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). He was a model before becoming an actor, and his first appearance as Bond was in a James Bond spoof called Casino Royale (1967), where he played himself.
3. Roger Moore
Roger Moore is a British actor best known for playing James Bond in seven films between 1973 and 1985. He was the oldest actor to play James Bond, at age 45 when he first played a role in Live and Let Die (1973). He was also the second-longest running actor to play James Bond, with six films under his belt before being replaced by Timothy Dalton.
Moore starred in more films than any other actor who played James Bond: A View to a Kill (1985), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983) and A View To A Kill (1985).
4. Timothy Dalton
Timothy Dalton is the fourth actor to play James Bond; he played a role in two films: The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989). He is also the oldest actor to play Bond.
Dalton was chosen as 007 after a search for a new actor began when Roger Moore decided not to return for his seventh appearance as Bond. The producers wanted someone younger than Moore who could bring more credibility to the role while still having an air of sophistication and class.
Dalton’s first film, The Living Daylights, was released in 1987, with John Glen returning as director after directing four previous Bond films, including For Your Eyes Only (1981). It was a box office success taking over $160 million globally on its initial release, but critics gave it mixed reviews because they felt it didn’t have enough action sequences, which were seen as critical ingredients of every other 007 film up until that point
5. Pierce Brosnan
Brosnan took over the role of Bond in 1995, playing him in four films: GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day. Before becoming a spy-flick star, he was best known for his role as Remington Steele on the hit 80s show Remington Steele. He also used to be a model back when models were allowed to have muscles (and actually wore clothes). Brosnan was the first Bond to be a father, and unlike some of his predecessors, he didn’t have many dalliances with other women on screen. He did, however, have a relationship with Halle Berry in one of his films, but they broke up before she became famous for playing Catwoman and Elektra in comics.
6. Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig is the most recent James Bond actor, having taken on the role in 2006. He’s also the sixth actor to play James Bond and has starred in three films: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. Craig is known for being a very physical actor, having trained with the Royal Marines before his first Bond film. He’s also known for doing many of his stunts and filming scenes himself without anybody doubles. Craig has worked with numerous famous actresses, including Eva Green, Carey Mulligan, and Gemma Arterton.
More on James Bond
Although James Bond has changed through the years, he is still one of the most iconic movie characters. He’s a British spy known for his catchphrase “Bond, James Bond” and his martinis.
James Bond was initially created by author Ian Fleming for his books about an agent named Commander James Bond and later adapted into a series of movies. Since then, there have been five actors who have played James Bond on screen: Sean Connery (1962-1967), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973-1985), and Timothy Dalton (1987-1989), and Pierce Brosnan (1995-2002). In 2005 Daniel Craig took over as 007 in Casino Royale, which Quantum of Solace followed in 2008, and Skyfall in 2012. His latest film Spectre will be released later this year!
We hope you enjoyed reading about these actors and their roles in James Bond movies. Although Daniel Craig is the current Bond, there are still many other actors who could take up the mantle for future installments in the franchise. With so many talented actors today, it’s hard to imagine who would be next to play 007!
