In the mood for some good old-fashioned time travel? How about a far-flung future where sentient robots are a part of everyday life? Or maybe you want to see a world ravaged by disease and now dominated by machines who look like humans. HBO Max has what you’re looking for with these fantastic sci-fi shows.

1. The Time Traveler’s Wife (2022)

If you’re a fan of time travel, romance, and science fiction, then The Time Traveler’s Wife (2022) is the perfect show for you. The series follows Clare Abshire, who meets Henry DeTamble when she’s just a little girl. They soon fall in love with each other and get married, but one thing that separates them from most couples is that Henry has the ability to travel through time. Throughout eight seasons, Clare must learn how to deal with her husband’s ability and live her own life without him whenever he leaves her for more than 24 hours.

2. Westworld (2016)

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy created Westworld for HBO as a science fiction western thriller television series. Westworld is based on a 1973 movie with the same name. In an era when mankind’s creations begin to surpass them in intelligence, Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), a young rancher’s daughter who discovers she has been created as an android, travels with a new-found friend to discover her true nature and concealed past.

3. Beforeigners (2019)

HBO Max’s Beforeigners is a science fiction series set in the future. The show is about a group of people trying to survive in an overpopulated world with limited resources. The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and follows an American family trying to make their way through this new world.

4. Made for Love (2021)

In 2021, a scientist invented a love drug that can turn anyone into a perfect partner. But someone else wants to steal and use it for their nefarious purposes. This sci-fi series is a dystopian retelling of the classic story The Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs, which was also adapted into an episode of The Twilight Zone in 1963.

Made for Love was first published as part of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror book series in 2016 and later adapted into a Hulu miniseries starring Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) and David Tennant (Doctor Who). It follows married couple Joe and Kate as they try to solve the mystery behind their new neighbor’s arrival from another dimension and his sudden death—all while being threatened by an evil corporation that wants access to his scientific breakthrough so they can sell off its product for profit.

5. Years and Years (2019)

Years and Years (2019) is a British drama series shortly. It focuses on the Lyons family, who are dealing with an altered world in which society has been turned upside down by climate change. This show won a BAFTA award for best TV drama series, and it was based on Michael Faber’s novel of the same name.

6. Raised by Wolves (2020)

Raised by Wolves, the first of the shows on this list to premiere, is a coming-of-age story set shortly. The show follows a group of teens living in a society where humans are no longer born. Instead, they are grown in labs and conditioned to be perfect citizens. But when their leader dies in an accident, they must decide how they want to live as they learn how to survive on their own.

7. Station Eleven (2021)

Based on the novel by Emily St. John Mandel, this HBO Max series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a flu pandemic has wiped out most of humanity and turned the survivors into wanderers. In this bleak landscape, Station Eleven follows a group of characters as they struggle to survive and find meaning in their lives despite their circumstances.

Alongside an ensemble cast that includes Edward Holcroft (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Jared Abrahamson (The Expanse), and Paul Gross (Passchendaele), Emily Hampshire stars as Kirsten Raymonde, an actress who finds herself drawn into a web of intrigue surrounding Kirsten’s former lover Arthur Leander (Holcroft).

While it might not be your typical sci-fi series or even one that would be considered dystopian entertainment at first glance due to its dramatic tones and slow pace, there are certainly plenty of elements worth watching for fans who enjoy stories about survival against all odds.

8. Peacemaker (2021)

Peacemaker is a great show for people who like reading well-written books. The writing is excellent, and so are the acting and directing. It’s also well produced, edited, soundtracked, scored, you name. It’s hard to maintain that level of quality across an entire season. Still, Peacemaker does it with its first season: starting as a sci-fi series about a world where humans can travel through time by harnessing energy from space (and yes, we get a lot of physics talk).

The peacemaker quickly evolves into something more when the protagonist finds herself working for an organization called The Children of Time. They travel back into history to fix historical events that have gone awry due to time travel altering specific timelines. The show balances its plots by using flashbacks within each episode; you’ll see what happened on Earth or in another timeline while also seeing where we’re going next week! This keeps things interesting without feeling too disjointed.

9. Snowpiercer (2020)

Snowpiercer is a dystopian action thriller film based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette. Bong Joon-ho directed the film set in a post-apocalyptic ice age caused by a failed experiment to stop global warming. The movie stars Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, and Jamie Bell as survivors of humanity’s last attempt at survival. Snowpiercer was released on August 1, 2013, by The Weinstein Company.
